UltraFlex Zinc Phosphate Metal Primer is a water-based, rust-inhibiting primer developed to protect correctly
prepared metal surfaces before the application of a compatible finishing coating.
The zinc-phosphate formulation promotes adhesion and provides corrosion protection, helping to create a
stable foundation for the complete protective coating system.
Its fast-drying, low-odour formulation makes it suitable for residential, commercial and professional
maintenance applications.

SUITABLE APPLICATIONS
UltraFlex Zinc Phosphate Metal Primer is suitable for correctly prepared standard metal surfaces, including:
• Mild steel
• General steelwork

• Agricultural and industrial metalwork
• Previously coated metal surfaces in sound condition

Suitability must be confirmed before use on specialised metals, factory-coated surfaces or unfamiliar
substrates.

Colour selection may depend on the required finishing system and project application.
The primer colour is not intended to replace the final decorative or protective coating unless specifically
approved.
SPREAD RATE
Approximately 8–10 m² per litre per coat, depending on:
• Surface profile
• Surface texture
• Application method
• Metal condition
• Preparation quality
• Applied film thickness
Rough, pitted or heavily profiled metal surfaces may achieve lower coverage.
SURFACE PREPARATION
Correct preparation is essential to long-term corrosion protection.
Before applying Zinc Phosphate Metal Primer:
• Remove dirt, dust, grease, oil and surface contamination.
• Remove loose rust, scale and corrosion products.
• Remove loose, flaking or poorly adhering existing coatings.
• Abrade smooth or glossy surfaces to provide a suitable mechanical key.
• Feather the edges of sound existing coatings.
• Clean prepared metal thoroughly before priming.
• Ensure the surface is dry and free from condensation.
• Confirm that remaining existing coatings are sound and compatible.
Heavily corroded, structurally weakened or contaminated metal may require specialist preparation before
coating.
The primer should be applied as soon as practical after preparation to reduce the risk of renewed surface
corrosion.
APPLICATION
UltraFlex Zinc Phosphate Metal Primer may be applied by:
• Brush
• Roller
• Suitable spray equipment
Stir thoroughly before and during application.
Apply evenly to the correctly prepared surface, paying particular attention to:
• Edges
• Welds
• Corners
• Bolts and fixings
• Pitted areas
• Difficult-to-reach sections
Avoid excessive spreading or uneven film thickness.
The required number of coats, drying time and recoating interval must follow the applicable Technical Data
Sheet and the exposure requirements of the project.
SUITABLE TOPCOATS
Once sufficiently dry, Zinc Phosphate Metal Primer may be overcoated with a compatible UltraFlex finishing
system selected for the intended exposure and use.
The finishing coat should be applied within the recommended recoating period.
Where the primed surface has been left exposed for an extended period, inspect and clean it before applying
the topcoat.

DRYING AND RECOATING
Zinc Phosphate Metal Primer is formulated to be fast drying.
Actual drying and recoating times may vary according to:

Refer to the latest Technical Data Sheet before application.
IMPORTANT LIMITATIONS
• Do not apply over dirt, grease, oil, loose rust or unstable coatings.
• Do not apply to damp metal or surfaces affected by condensation.
• Do not apply directly over heavily corroded metal without adequate preparation.
• Confirm compatibility before applying to galvanised steel, aluminium, factory-coated metal or
specialised alloys.
• Do not leave the primer exposed longer than the permitted recoating period without inspection and
preparation.
• The primer must be protected with a compatible finishing coating where required.
• Do not apply during rain or when the coating may be exposed to moisture before it has dried
sufficiently.
• Coverage and drying times may vary according to the surface and site conditions.
• Structural corrosion and weakened metal must be professionally assessed and repaired
